BF Endures 68-54 loss to Long Trail

DORSET-The Catamounts were able to extend a 2 point lead to 11, thanks to a 9-0 run in 2 minutes of the fourth quarter, breaking open a close contest and delivering the Terriers their second defeat of the young season.

“We are still learning how to close out these close games,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “The film on this one, which the team has already studied, was telling.”

The Terriers led by 2 after one, and were within 4 at halftime, thanks to a buzzer-beating layup by Andrew Dunbar, off a Jamison Nystrom dish. The closing points of the half were Dunbar’s first points of the season. “He improves everyday,” said Chadwick of his Sophmore center.

BF (1-2) will take a quick holiday break and then be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Hartford to face off with the 2-1 Hurricanes. JV tips at 5:30, Varsity at 7.

Terriers drop contest to Mounties

CHESTER- At times on Thursday night, it appeared an invisible lid had been placed on the Terrier basket. Enduring an initial 11-0 run by MSJ, the Terriers hung tough but, in the end, a lack of consistent offensive production resulted in a 55-37 loss to the D-2 powerhouse from Rutland.

“This one falls on me,” said Coach Evan Chadwick. “Simply put, I did not get our guys prepared enough to face a team like MSJ.” “Our effort was awesome, our execution was not.”

MSJ jumped out to the early lead thanks to 3 treys that had the Terriers call an early timeout. The Purple and White would respond with a 8-2 run to cut the lead to as few as 4 and at half, they trailed by just 8; 25-17.

The Mounties would extend the lead to start the third to as many as 18. However, the Terriers would continue to fight, clawing back to within 11 on several occasions. Eli Albee hit 2 baseline threes and added a mid-range and Cole Moore was a defensive force converting steals to easy layups. But, on this day, the Terriers simply could not hit the big shots when they needed them and MSJ was able to maintain their double digit margin on their way to winning the Green Mountain Holiday Trophy.

Albee and Walker James led the Terriers with 8 points a piece.

BF (1-1) will have nearly a week off as they prepare for their next contest on Wednesday, December 21, when they travel to Dorset to face off with Long Trail.

Terriers Open Season with Gritty W at Green Mountain

CHESTER- At times it was less then pretty, at other times, it was downright ugly. Nevertheless, the Terriers’ Boys Basketball Team gutted out a 58-39 win against Green Mountain on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Green Mountain Holiday Tournament.

“This contest was everything we could have expected,” said Head Coach, Evan Chadwick. “Things did not go right early for us, but our toughness shown through.”

Green Mountain would lead by as many as nine early in the second quarter at 17-8. However, the Purple and White would end the half on a 20-3 run, capped by a Walker James pull up 3 at the buzzer that had the Terriers race to locker room leading 28-20.

“Big shot by Walk,” said Chadwick. “That trey took the wind right out of GM’s sails.”

The Terriers would slowly extend their lead in the second half, thanks to a combination of dribble penetration and offensive rebounds. Colby Dearborn found his touch, dropping 3 three pointers in the second half on his way to a career high 22 point performance. Jamison Nystrom dished out several dimes to the Terrier bigs (Jake Moore, Pete Kamel and Cole Moore) down low for easy buckets and the Terriers’ press wore down the Chieftains, granting the Terriers their first win of the season and a rematch with Mount St. Joseph in the championship round.

Tip time is slated for 7:20. For those fans who cannot make the trip, the game can also be watched live on NFHSnetwork.com.

Polish applied, Terriers take big step

Warming up the bus at 7:30am, the Terrier boys varsity basketball squad shook off the early morning Saturday fog when they traveled to Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont to participate in a round robin scrimmage with Fair Haven, Essex and Spaulding High Schools.

The progress witnessed throughout the day was a sight to see.

“Our guys showed a lot of resiliency and a passion to compete,” said Assistant Coach, Josh Hanson. “We went into the day emphasizing that each play was 0-0. The boys took that message to heart and competed for every possession.”

The purple and white will be back to practice on Monday and Tuesday before they head to Brattleboro for one last tune-up with the Colonels.

The JV will also get their first crack at outside competition as they will travel with the varsity. JV tip at 5:45pm with varsity to follow at 7:15pm.

The pursuit of “One” begins

2 grueling practices, two emphatic checkmarks, the Bellows Falls Boys Basketball Family commenced the 2022-23 season exactly how Coach Evan Chadwick and his staff had hoped for; sloppy, but impressive.

“Effort was perfect,” said Chadwick. “We obviously have a lot to work on, but that’s what makes it exciting.”

JV and Varsity have been mostly divided , with several hard decisions yet to be made. “We have narrowed the varsity roster to 15 guys,” said Chadwick. “Ultimatley, we will be cutting down to 12.”

Varsity will travel to Spaulding High School this Saturday for a round robin scrimmage facing Fair Haven, Essex and Spaulding in a series of short matches, the first commencing at 10am v. FH.

“Stoked that Spaulding added us to this opening event,” said Chadwick. “Playing time will be plentiful for all.”
