Terrier blitz downs Wildcats

WESTMINSTER- Energy, pressure and physicality prove to be a winning combination for the BF boys, as they took down Twin Valley 77-28 on Monday night in front of an energetic home crowd. With the win, the Terriers remain undefeated at home and up their record to 10-4.

“Our guys are playing with confidence and we’re starting to see the caliber of team that we can be,” said Assistant Coach Josh Hanson. “The one thing I love most about this team is that they  give everything they have every time on the floor, up 30 down 30 or anywhere in between, these young men play hard “Hanson”

After the Wildcats hit an opening three, the Terriers were able to run off 17 straight points to take control of the contest early. Jamison Nystrom scored 6 of his 12 points in the first, Cole Moore added a three and Jake Moore contributed a 3 point play from inside that gave BF a 14 point lead after the first.

The Terriers doubled their lead to 28 at the break in large part due to their newly found 3-point stroke. Three different BF players hit from long range in the quarter including an Eli Allbee corner trey just before the horn sounded off a nifty feed from Caden Haskell.

“Confidence leads to efficient shooting,” said Hanson.

Any hope of a storied comeback for the Wildcats was dashed in the third when the Terriers extended the lead to 40. Jaxon Clark continued his hot hand, scoring 8 in the frame, while freshmen, Blake Bertrand, hit one of his two threes on his way to a career high 6 points in his first season.

In total, the Terriers saw four players reach double digits, led by Colby Dearborn’s 14, Nystrom’s 12, Cole Moore’s 11, while Jake Moore and Clark adding 10 a piece.

A huge Division 3 contest awaits BF on Wednesday when they travel to South Royalton to face off with the 10-4 Wildcats of White River Valley. JV tips at 5:30, Varsity at 7pm.

Terriers take it to Minutemen

CLARENDON- The BF boys basketball squad took little time to shake off the frigid cold in their Saturday matchup with Mill River, scoring the first nine points and extending their lead to 21 after the first quarter on their way to an 88-35 victory.

“It was good to see the ball go through the hoop,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick, whose Terriers hit a team high 10 three pointers on the day. “All 12 of my guys scored, which was really important for us.”

Colby Dearborn led the offensive charge with 22 points, which included 5 treys. Walker James added 12 points and Jaxon Clark contributed 10 .

“At this point in the season, it’s all about consistent effort on both sides of the ball,” said Chadwick. “Despite the -10 temperatures when we got on the bus this morning, I think each of our guys gave us that consistent effort throughout the contest.”

The Terriers have little time to savor their ninth victory of the season, as they host Twin Valley on Monday. JV tips at 5:30, with Varsity slated for a 7pm start.

Terriers eek out win over GM

Cole Moore hits what proves to be the game winner

WESTMINSTER- Trailing by 10 points early in the second quarter, the BF boys looked to be on their heels versus a much improved Chieftain squad. It was at this pivotal moment that BF responded, closing out the quarter on a 15-2 run and seizing enough momentum to carry over into the second half for a 47-41 victory over their long time rival.

“We showed improvement down the stretch,” said Assistant Coach Josh Hanson. “We’re learning to take control of these close games, but we still have work left to do.”

Jamison Nystrom fueled the second quarter charge, scoring 12 of his 18 points in the frame on a mixture of mid-range jumpers, including hitting 4 straight over a 2 minute span.

In the fourth, the Chieftains would tie the contest on 2 occasions, but inside buckets by Pete Kamel (4 points), Cole Moore (5 points) and Jake Moore (9 points), along with clutch free throw shooting from Walker James (9 points) was just enough to give the Terriers their 8th win of the season and move them ahead of Green Mountain to 6th in the current Division 3 standings.

A big road contest awaits BF on Saturday when they travel to Clarendon to face off with Mill River. Tip time is 11am with no JV contest.

BF drops physical contest with Raptors

46 free throws, 33 fouls. For anyone who traveled north to Orford NH for a clash between two of the conferences top teams, the fans were treated to a physical, somewhat choppy affair that saw the Raptors withhold several Terrier runs to earn the 74-60 victory.

“We can’t put a team to the free throw line as much as we did and expect a different result,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “I am not upset with the effort, just the little things that turned this game into a foul-fest.”

The Terriers trailed by 12 at half after Rivendell ran off 10 straight points. BF would close to as few as 7 in the fourth after back-to-back threes by Jake Moore and Colby Dearborn, but the Raptors were able to hit 6 free throws in the final minute to close out the contest, dropping the Purple and White to 7-4 on the season.

Jamison Nystrom led all scorers with 31 points.

Bellows Falls will face off with Green Mountain on Wednesday. JV tips at 5:30 and Varsity at 7.

WESTMINSTER-On an icy Thursday night, it took little time for Holland Gym to warm up, as the Terriers boys basketball squad scored early and often in their 70-40 victory over Leland and Gray. With the win, the Terriers now stand at 7-3.

“Our guys come to battle every night,” said Assistant Coach Josh Hanson.

BF would take a 7 point lead after the first quarter and a 13 point advantage at the break. Colby Dearborn scored 13 points in the half on his way to a 17 point evening.

The Terriers would extend the lead to as many as 20 in the third. Caden Haskell was a beast on both sides of the ball, scoring an inside bucket, grabbing 4 rebounds and registering a steal, all in 5 minutes of action.

The Rebels would claw back to within 11, the product of a 9-0 run to close the quarter.

“As a team, we are still trying to emphasize the little things,” said Hanson. “Our toughness will only take us so far.”

Bellows Falls would not let the Rebels stay in the contest long, as they opened the fourth on a 7-0 run and coasted from there. Jaxon Clark scored six points in the quarter and grabbed 3 boards, Cole Moore hit a corner three and Andrew Dunbar registered a steal and a coast-to-coast layup to aide the effort.

BF will put their 6 game win streak on the line on Monday, when they travel North to face off with Sharon Academy at 6pm. There is no JV game.

WESTMINSTER–The Terriers continued their winning ways, closing out a 67-58 win over Poultney to extend their win streak to four straight as they approach mid-season.

“We were climbing uphill from the start,” said Coach Evan Chadwick. “These young men are tough, they battled through and got the W we needed.”

BF led 18-13 after one quarter and took a 3 point lead into half. Colby Dearborn (22 pts) and Jamison Nystrom (19pts) continued to improve their shooting percentage, combining for 17 points in the first half.

The Terriers seized control of the contest in the third, outscoring the Blue Devils 21-13. Jake Moore (10 pts) dominated the boards, grabbing 6 in the frame and scoring 8 points and the BF defense started to turn Poultney over, led by 2 steals a piece for Walker James and Dearborn.

The Blue Devils had some fight left, closing the deficit to as few as 5. BF was able to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to close out the contest and jump their record to 6-3, which lands them at 6th in the current Division 3 standings.

“This is when things get really interesting,” said Coach Chadwick. “I love where we are at, but we all realize just how much better we can be. We, as a team, are all in.”

The Purple and White are back in action on Thursday at 7pm, with a showdown with the Rebels of Leland and Gray in Westminster.

Thrilla in Westminsta! Terriers defeat Cosmos

No words can do justice for this photo….this is Terrier pride! (Photo by Kristi Lisai)

The Terriers and Cosmos were locked in a classic battle between two teams reaching their mid season form. Reminiscent of the historic rivalry that saw sold out gymnasiums for many years the two teams battled to the very end, with BF coming out on top 58-55.

“What a game, what a crowd,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “Springfield is not a 1-6 team, they are physical, skilled and well coached. No one should sleep on them the second half of the season.”

Bellows Falls would take a 6 point lead into halftime. The Cosmos responded in the third, outscoring the Terriers by 9 and at the buzzer, an NBA range 3, gave the Cosmos their first lead of the contest.

The final 8 minutes were full of swings, with neither team gaining any meaningful seperation.

Jamison Nystrom (12 points) was simply sensational in the fourth, diving on a loose ball, hitting several pull-ups and adding 3 free throws. Jake Moore (12 points) battled the bigger Cosmos all night and added a clutch floater in the fourth to keep BF ahead.

“Jake and Jamio played like captains tonight,” said Chadwick.

The Terriers extended their lead to as many as 8 with 3 minutes remaining, but the Cosmos would not go quietly, as their press generated several turnovers to narrow the lead to as little as 2.

Walker James proved clutch in the final minute, hitting 2 free throws to extend the lead back to 4 and the Cosmos were unable to hit a desperation shot as time expired.

BF has now run off 3 straight wins and jumps above the .500 mark at 4-3.

The Terriers will travel to Jacksonville on Friday to face off with Twin Valley. JV tips at 5:30pm with Varsity to follow at 7pm.

Terriers earn character win vs. Wildcats

WESTMINSTER-A packed house at Holland Gym was treated to a thrilling back and forth affair between Bellows Falls and White River Valley on Saturday afternoon. In the end, the Purple and White was able to hold onto a 48-45 win over a gritty Wildcat squad.

“There were times when I thought we were going to give this one away,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “Credit my guys though, they stuck with it and made the plays we needed to hold on.”

After White River jumped out to a 6 point lead on back to back 3s by Wyatt Cadwell, which proved to be the largest deficit either team faced all night, both teams traded punches in a physical contest that saw a combined total of 62 free throws.

White River held onto a 2 point lead with 2 minutes remaining. Jamison Nystrom was able to hit 2 from the stripe to even the contest at 44. After White River hit one free throw of their own to retake the lead, Colby Dearborn’s fadeaway from the short corner put the Terriers in front for good.

The Terriers would extend their lead to three on a Dearborn layup off a Jake Moore assist with 5 seconds remaining. WRV would get the ball into Cadwell and his desperation half court shot was just off the mark, earning BF their third win of the season, evening their record to 3-3.

Dearborn and Nystrom each scored 11 points for the Terriers. Walker James added 8 and Moore contributed 7 along with 8 boards.

The Terriers are next in action on Tuesday, as they welcome their Exit 6 rivals, the Springfield Cosmos to town. JV tips at 5:30pm with Varsity slated for 7pm.

BF Cruises to 64-39 Victory over Arlington

WESTMINSTER- Home Opener – check, home victory-check, work to be done? – check.

The Terriers used their depth and athleticism to wear down a tough Arlington team on their way to a 64-39 victory on Tuesday night in front of a large crowd at Holland Gym.

“Feels great to be home,” said Coach Evan Chadwick, whose team jumps to 2-3 on the young season.” “The glimpses of the team we can be are starting to shine a little brighter, but we still have a long ways to go.”

The Terriers led by 17 at the half after a Caden Haskell spin move bucket in the paint.

The Eagles would not let the Terriers feel comfortable after the break as they narrowed the deficit to as few as 13 in the third quarter. “Sloppy in the third,” said Chadwick. “We are looking at that film first thing today to see where things went south.”

Ultimately, the Terriers size would allow them to wear down the smaller Eagles and they were able to close out the fourth, maintaining a 20 point advantage for most of the frame.

8 players scored for BF led by Colby Dearborn’s 19 and Jamison Nystrom’s 11. Haskell was just short of a double-double with 8 points and 9 boards.

BF will be next in action on Tuesday, when they host the 2-2 Rebels of Leland and Gray.

Terrier skid extends to 3 in loss to Hurricanes

HARTFORD- A slow start allowed Hartford to maintain a double digit lead throughout the contest, as the 4-1 Hurricanes were able to defeat the Terriers on Tuesday night 67-43.

“Our guys showed a lot of resolve last night,” said Assistant Coach, Josh Hanson. “Its that sense of pride and passion that is going to drive this team. The rest will come as we continue to improve every day.”

Hartford raced out to an 8-1 lead in the first four minutes and took a 13 point lead into the first break. After extending the lead to as many as 23 in the second, the Terriers fought back closing the contest to 15 to end the half.

Colby Dearborn scored 10 points in the frame to keep BF within striking distance.

The Terriers had several chances to narrow the lead to single digits in the third, but missed layups kept them from crossing that threshold.

The Terriers out rebounded the Hurricanes at a 2-1 ratio in the second half, led by Center, Pete Kamel’s 12 boards, including 5 offensive grabs.

Dearborn lead all BF (1-3) scorers with 12 points. Kamel added 4 points and 14 rebounds, while Jamison Nystrom pitched in with 9 points and 6 assists.

The Terriers will get their long awaited home opener on Thursday when Arlington comes to Westminster. JV tips at 5:30pm, Varsity follows at 7pm.
