One Aud indeed. (All Photos by Kristi Lisai)

By now, everyone who has followed the Bellows Falls basketball season knows that it ended at the Barre Auditorium with their 71-51 loss to the undefeated and now crowned Division 3 champion, Winooski Spartans. And, in turn, anyone who witnessed the semi final matchup knows that the Terriers concluded their season the only way they know how; with class and grit to the very end.

“What can I say?” said Coach Evan Chadwick. “These guys are so special. I will be forever grateful for the last four months and will cherish it for the rest of my days.”

“Each of these young men brought a unique combination of leadership that our underclassmen latched onto,” said Chadwick. “They will be sorely missed next year. The impact they have had on the Terriers basketball program will last forever.”

BF ended the season with a 17-6 record and will return a large contingent of players next year that will put the purple and white firmly in the State Championship conversation for the 2023-24 season.

“Pre-season starts now,” said Chadwick. “We have had that taste of the Aud and it’s clear in looking at these young men’s eyes after our loss, that they are hungry for more.”

Barre Bound! Terriers Punch Their Ticket

RICHFORD- In what can only be described as an instant classic, The Terriers earned their first trip to the Barre Auditorium in 22 years with a thrilling come from behind 54-51 victory over the Richard Falcons on Monday night.

“There is no better feeling than seeing these guys earn what they have worked so hard for all year,” said Coach Evan Chadwick. “I am tired, worn down and epically pumped up all at the same time.”

The Terriers made the 3.5 hour trip North in style, courtesy of the BF faithful who raised funds for a roomy charter bus and plenty of snacks to fuel the legs for the trip. And, although the Terriers struggled to find their shooting touch early, their defense was as solid as ever, holding Richard to 6 first quarter points to enter the second quarter down by just 3.

“I cannot thank our families and friends enough for providing us everything we needed to prepare for the trip,” said Chadwick. “It truly was a community-wide assist.”

Neither team could gather much separation in the middle two quarters. Jesse Darrell hit a corner 3 to stretch the BF lead to 6, but the Falcons responded and, after 3 the Terriers lead by 4.

Richford would recapture the lead with 2 minutes remaining, but Cole Moore would answer with a corner 3 and the contest was knotted at 47. Richford would take a 4 point lead with under 2 minutes remaining, by again the Terriers had an answer. Jake Moore finished inside on a Jamison Nystrom assist and, after Walker James hit 1 of 2 free throws on one of his 7 offensive rebounds in the second half, the Terriers forced a turnover.

The senior connection of Nystrom and Moore again proved to be the winning combination, as Nystrom found Moore inside, who finished the contested floater to take the lead.

The closing seconds of the Terriers victory and ensuing celebration.

After another turnover forced by the Terrier defense, Nystrom was fouled and calmly hit two free throws. The next 27 seconds was a frantic affair that saw Richford get two heavily contested looks at the tying 3. Neither found the mark and the Terriers fans and players celebrated together, earning their right to face off with the #1 seed Winooski Spartans on Thursday night with a trip to the Division 3 championship on the line.

WESTMINSTER- Onward to Canada! (or the border at least)

Trailing 7-0 just one minute into their contest with Windsor in the first round of the D 3 playoffs, the BF boys looked to be a little out of sorts. Nevertheless, the Purple persisted , running off 15 straight points to capture a lead that they would never relinquish on their way to a 55-41 win at Holland Gym on Wednesday night.

“Really proud of our guys last night,” said Assistant Coach Josh Hanson. “They had a solid understanding of the game plan and executed it beautifully. We had a lot of guys step up in different ways.”

With the win, the Terriers earn a trip to the #4 seed Richford, who snuck by Woodstock in their first round matchup.

“Happy to go wherever, whenever with these guys,” said Coach Evan Chadwick.

Windsor could not close the gap to any fewer then 9 the rest of the way, after a 4-0 spurt midway through the third. At that time, the offensive rebounding of the Terriers took over, as both Jake Moore and Walker James grabbed 4 to give the Terriers extra possessions and to eat more time off the clock allowing them to close out the contests and their 16th win of the season.

Dearborn lead all scorers with 21 points, Nystrom followed with 10 and Cole Moore hit for 8 points, 8 boards and 3 blocks.

The BF boys ended the regular season in style on Saturday, grinding out a 50-48 victory over Leland and Gray when Jamison Nystrom hit a layup as the buzzer sounded, ending the Terrier regular season with a 15-5 record and a #5 seed in the Division 3 playoffs.

The day before, the Terriers dropped their contest with Rivendell 56-43. The loss gave the Raptors the C division CVL crown for the second year in a row.

“Both games were hard fought,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “These contests were a great way to get us prepared for the playoffs.”

Battle in Townshend Falls Purple’s Way

It was not a pretty affair for the Terriers, but, it was effective. The Rebels, celebrating their seniors in front of a raucous crowd, played with passion and energy that gave them a 2 point lead with under 2 minutes remaining.

Nystrom first hit 2 free throws to draw the team even at 48. After a steal on the ensuing Rebel possession, the Terriers elected to hold for the last shot. With senior composure, Jake Moore and Nystrom played the two man pick-and-roll to perfection, allowing Nystrom to cut the corner and finish one off the glass just as time expired, sending the bench and the strong contingent of BF supporters into a frenzy.

“Credit Leland and Gray,” said Chadwick. “They came ready to play. But also, credit my guys, they stuck with it and closed this game out in a tough environment.”

BF draws a tough first round opponent, as the 12 seeded Windsor Yellow Jackets come to town on Wednesday for a 7pm tip.

This game is going to be awesome,” said Chadwick. “We need the entire community to come out and support these young men. Let’s fill the stands!”

Bellows Falls Sinks Phoenix

SHARON-The Terriers jumped out to an early 15 point lead and steadily extended it to take home their 14th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, 77-31.

“We got all our guys reps today,” said Coach Chadwick. “Overall, I thought the effort was there on both sides of the ball. There are things however, that we can do better.”

With the win, BF stands in 4th place in the Division 3 standings with two big games left on the regular season, none bigger then on Thursday night, when defending CVL Champion Rivendell comes to town on Thursday for a 7pm tip. Rivendell handed BF one of their losses early in the season in Orford.

“We need to have perfect effort in our practices to be prepared for that one,” said Chadwick. “It should be an awesome contest.”

WESTMINSTER- Well, that was fun.

In front of a packed house on Thursday evening, the Terriers and Yellowjackets thrilled the crowd with a fast paced contest. In the end, the day was for the purple, with BF taking the contest 67-57.

Windsor guard, Maison Fortin, eclipse the elusive 1,000 point mark in the fourth quarter, when he scored his 27th point of the evening off the front end of a 1-and-1.

“What an accomplishment,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “That dude has been a gamer since day 1, improving year in and out. This accomplishment is a testament to what hard work can bring you in this game.”

The score was knotted after one at 15 all. Colby Dearborn got hot early, hitting 2 threes and Jamison Nystrom added another triple to neutralize Fortin’s 11 points.

Windsor would go on a 6-0 in the second that opened up an 8 point lead, forcing BF to take a timeout.

The Terriers responded, whittling the lead to 1 and getting a key stop as time expired when Eli Albee blocked a Fortin shot to take the game into the break.

Cole Moore scored 5 of his 7 points in the frame, Nystrom added his second trey and Eli Albee finished from inside, which extended BF’s lead to 4.

BF scored 21 points in the fourth to put the contest on ice, slowly expanding the lead to double digits. Caeden Haskell led the charge, scoring all 7 of his points in the quarter, including a massive 3 point play with under 2 minutes remaining that stretched the Terrier lead out to 11.

BF Boys withstand Wildcat rally to capture road W

SOUTH ROYALTON– The Terriers raced out to a 25-4 advantage after the first quarter and were able to withstand a frantic fourth quarter by White River Valley to earn a 63-52 win on Wednesday evening.

“Wow is pretty much all I can say,” said Head Coach Evan Chadwick. “A great game, with two great teams in an awesome environment. Words really don’t do this game justice.

Using a full court press, the Terriers turned the Wildcats over often in the first quarter. Walker James was a menace on both sides of the ball, scoring 13 points in the quarter and harnessing 3 steals.

“Whatever Walk ate before the game, he needs to repeat,” said Chadwick. “He was all energy tonight.”

The Wildcats began to find their footing in the second quarter, but the Terriers were still able to extend the lead out to 25 to the tune of a 15-11 frame. Jake Moore continued his strong play inside and seven Terriers scored to give BF what seemed to be an insurmountable lead heading into halftime.

Insurmountable it was not. White River came out in the third with a new found energy and began taking the attack to the Terriers, narrowing the deficit to 17 entering the fourth and getting the raucous crowd firmly back into the contest.

“We knew they (WRV) had a punch left in them,” said Chadwick. “They are too skilled and too well coached to just lay down and they certainly did not.”

The fourth saw some tenuous moments for the Terriers as WRV was able to continue to chip away the deficit to as few as 10. In the closing minutes, Cole Moore, stepped up in a massive way, scoring inside, grabbing four boards and settling the troops down, allowing the BF faithful to collectivley take a sigh of relief, and earn the Terriers their 11th win of the season.

Nine players scored for the Terriers, led by James’ 18 and Jake Moore’s 10.

Bellows Falls, now 11-4, will next be in action Monday when they host Mill River at 7pm.
