Colonels close out season with loss to Rutland

Colonels gear up for their last contest of the season

RUTLAND- The Red Raiders raced out to a 14-0 advantage and were able to keep the Colonels at arms length the entirety of the game on their way to a 59-40 victory on Wednesday night at Rutland High School.

“Tough one tonight,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick. “I think it took a little while for the boys to get going and when they did, it was too late.”

Rutland was able to pound the ball inside early and their press forced the Colonels into 8 first quarter turnovers. Despite their struggles offensively the Colonels were able to narrow the lead to 9 at the end of the first and were down just 12 at halftime.

There was hope for the Colonels early in the 3rd as Tristain Evans hit two threes to narrow the lead to as little as 8. However, Rutland was too good on this night, as they were able to stretch the lead to 20 by the end of the quarter and cruised in the fourth to serve up the Colonels their first and only loss of the season.

“What a great season these young men had,” stated Coach Chadwick. They all came to work every practice and every game. Of course we are all upset about our result today, but the character that was shown by this squad all season will last far longer than any single game could.”

The Colonels end their season at 8-1.

Colonels grind out road win at Hartford

HARTFORD–Trailing by 8 points going into the fourth, nothing was going well for the Colonels in their Monday matchup with the Hartford Hurricanes. Facing the largest deficit of their season, the Colonels found enough gas in the tank to close the contest with a 20-8 fourth quarter that secured a 54-49 victory pushing the Colonels to 8-0 on the season.

“Boy that was a grind,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick. “I give a lot of credit to Hartford, they played very well, but my guys were able to hang in there, which is a huge testament to the character I have on this team.”

Hartford came out hot, scoring the first four points of the quarter and taking a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. Josh McKenney was able to keep the Colonels close hitting a corner three, but two quick fouls forced McKenney to sit out most of the quarter.

The Colonels were able to find some momentum in the second, pounding the ball inside to Ayoub Lahar, who more than held his own against the Hurricanes twin towers who stood at 6’6″ and 6′ 3″. Lahar scored five points in the quarter, including an old fashion 3 point play that gave the Colonels their first lead at 18-16. Joey Reynolds also finished two inside moves to keep the Hurricanes at bay and, despite shooting just 1-10 from three, the Colonels went into the locker room leading 23-20.

Hartford quickly reclaimed the lead in the 3rd, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run and outscoring the Colonels 21-11. Ramen Geoprer, scored six straight points, while the Hurricane’s shifty point guard, Bradley Dillon added 3 points and 4 assists. Phoenix Chambers came alive for the Colonels scoring 5 straight points near the end of the quarter to keep the Colonels within striking distance at 41-34.

Wasting little time, the Colonels found a new level of energy early in the fourth, going on a 6-0 run to start the quarter and taking the lead at 44-42 with 4 minutes remaining. In what was the dagger for the Hurricane’s upset bid, Tristain Evans, who had struggled with his shooting for most of the game, converted a steal into a layup and then, off another steal, sank a corner three to increase the Colonel lead and allow Brattleboro to hang on for the hard earned road victory.

Lahar lead the Colonels on the night with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks followed by Evans with 16, including 11 in the fourth.

The Hurricanes were lead by Geoprer’s 16.

Colonels top Patriots remain unbeaten

McKenney hits one from deep

BRATTLEBORO-Records can be thrown out the window when the Colonels and Patriots face off. At 7-3 Mount Anthony have shown that they can compete with just about anyone. Compete the Patriots did in their Monday matchup with the Colonels as they took a 3 point lead midway through the second quarter and had the Colonels off balance for most of the first half.

Showing depth and resilience however, the Colonels finished the half on a 6-0 run thanks to back-to-back threes by Josh McKenney and then came out in the second half to turn a 3 point lead into an 11 point 4th quarter advantage on their way to a 57-36 victory at Brattleboro High School.

“I thought MAU had the better of play in the first half,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick after the game. “Their zone defense had us rattled.”

Packing the paint and turning the Colonels into a perimeter team MAU used their size and physicality to limit the Colonels to one shot a possession early on. The Colonels struggled to stretch the Patriot defense starting the game 0-5 from three.

Connor McPhail finally broke the seal for the Colonels hitting an elbow three with a minute left to notch the game at 12 at the end of the first quarter.

Melo swings ball over top of MAU zone

The shooting woes continued for the Colonels in the second as they missed their first three shots that allowed MAU to take a brief lead with three minutes remaining. McKenney was able to get hot at the right time, scoring 8 points in the quarter allowing the Colonels to claw back into the lead 22-20 at the break.

Wasting little time in the third, the Colonels blazed out of the break with a 12-2 run. Irvin Melo finished three transition layups and added a sensational and 1 finish to balloon the Colonel lead to 15. Ayoub Lahar, who had struggled with foul trouble early, also got into the action scoring 6 points in the frame.

MAU tried to hang in with Adam Whitman hitting from deep and following up with a put back bucket to cut the Colonel lead to 9. It was too little too late though for the Patriots as the Colonels closed out the contest with a 17-7 fourth quarter that pushed Brattleboro to 7-0 on the season.

The Colonels had eight different players score with Tristain Evans, McKenney, Lahar and Melo all scoring double digits. Joey Reynolds contributed 4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in only 12 minutes of action.

The Colonels next take their show on the road, as they to New Hampshire to face off with the Hinsdale Pacers. Tip time is slated for 5:30pm.

Shocker! Colonels handle Blackbirds

Swarming defense lead to a 19-0 first quarter for the Colonels

BRATTLEBORO-In what was touted to be a dog fight, the Colonels left fans with little doubt, outscoring the Keene Blackbirds 19-0 in the first quarter and easing their way to a 54-36 victory on Thursday afternoon at Brattleboro High School.

“Going into this game I expected a very difficult challenge,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick after the game. “The energy the boys gave in the first quarter was truly magnificent.”

Employing a full court press that fell back into a trapping zone defense, the Colonels pressed the gas pedal early and often. Irvin Melo was simply sensational, scoring 10 points in the first frame on a variety of driving layups that left the bigger Keene players flatfooted.

Josh McKenney, who was called on to battle in the post defensively contributed 4 steals in the quarter and dished out three assists while also adding a bucket of his own. “Josh lead us defensively, today” stated Coach Chadwick. “When a young man plays that hard, its impossible to take him out.”

The Colonels stretched the lead in the second quarter to as many as 26. Ayoub Lahar dropped 12 points in the frame, hitting a deep three and finishing several second chance opportunities, while Melo chipped in another 6 points.

Connor McPhail leads the break

With the Colonels comfortably in the lead, Coach Chadwick experimented with different personnel combinations in the third quarter. Keene started to take advantage, pounding the ball down low to big man Nick Maslowski and getting to the free throw line on their way to an matching the Colonels 8-8 in the quarter.

Keene continued to press the issue in the forth and had their best quarter of the matchup, outscoring Brattleboro 18-8.

“I though we mailed it in at the end,” stated Coach Chadwick. “You have to credit Keene for sticking with it, but as the boys know, I was not happy with how we finished.”

The 6-0 Colonels were lead by Lahar’s 17 points followed closely by Melo with 16 and Tristain Evans with 12.

Keene was lead by Maslowski’s 10.

Identity found: Colonels sprint to victory over Red Raiders

Swarming defense lead to easy offense for the Colonels on Friday afternoon

Outscoring Rutland 21-5 in the third, the Colonels turned a close contest into a lopsided 48-27 victory over the Red Raiders on Friday afternoon to go to 5-0 on the season.

“We developed some identity today,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick. “I think the boys are starting to find that next level.”

The Colonels were locked in a tight affair early, as Rutland got to the free throw line off the opening tip and followed up with an inside bucket by Ryan Coss to take an early 4-0 lead.

Jordy Allembert cut the lead to one with a deep elbow three and the Colonels closed out the first on their own 4-0 run for a narrow 10-9 lead.

Ayoub Lahar looks to lead the break off one of his 8 rebounds

Stepping up the defensive pressure in the second, the Colonels turned Rutland over on 4 straight possessions, capping a 6-0 run with a Darian Wade jumper to stretch the lead to 12. Rutland hung tough, grabbing 3 offensive rebounds in the last minute which lead to a buzzer beating three by Ryan Coss to cut the Colonel lead to 22-13 at the break.

Playing as strong a quarter as has been seen out of the Colonel squad this season, Brattleboro wasted little time in distancing themselves from Rutland. Tristain Evans went off, going on a personal 11-0 run and scoring 13 in the frame that saw the Colonels lead expand to as much as 22.

“A lot of fun to watch,” stated Coach Chadwick. “It was great to see them feed off each other’s energy.”

The Colonels got points from 10 different players, lead by Evan’s 17. Jordy Allembert added 12 rebounds and 3 blocks. Rutland was lead by Ryan Coss, who hit two 3s on his way to 13 points.

The Colonels are next in action on Thursday, January 30, as they welcome the Keene High Blackbirds to town.
