Terriers drop close one to Long Trail

BELLOWS FALLS-The Terrier struggled offensively in the second half, shooting just 25% from the field on their way to dropping their home opener versus Long Trail 43-36.

“Just couldn’t hit that big shot in the 4th,” said head Coach Evan Chadwick. “Our defense kept us in it the whole game, which I am very proud of. The little things were the only difference in us pulling this one out against a very good Long Trail team.”

The Terriers jumped out early in the contest feeding big man, Owen LaRoss for three straight buckets inside, taking an 8-2 lead four minutes into the contest. Long Trail would cut the lead to 14-8 at the first break thanks to a late 4-0 run. “O took a big step forward today,” said Coach Chadwick. “He is finding that next level.”

The Terrier bench stepped up in the second, lead by Jaxson Clark’s and-1 and a deep three, that kept the Terriers at arms length. Jake Moore added three points off an inside bucket and a free throw and the Terriers ran to the locker room clinging to a 27-25 lead.

BF hung in in the second half, fueled by a tenacious and physical man defense. Despite only scoring 3 points in the third, Long Trail would only grab the lead off a buzzer beating corner three that gave them a 32-30 lead going into the fourth.

The offensive woes continued in the 4th as, despite getting the looks they wanted, the ball simply would not fall for the purple and white. Long Trail was able to extend the lead with 3 minutes to go and hit a couple of free throws down the stretch on their way to going 4-0 on the season.

Owen LaRoss led the Terriers with 14 points and 12 boards.

With the loss the Terriers drop to 1-2 on the season, They are back into the fire on Monday as they host Division 2 powerhouse Hartford at Holland Gym.

Terriers drop contest with MSJ

CHESTER-Short handed but not short of heart, the Bellows Falls boys basketball team battled MSJ for 4 quarters, eventually falling to the Mounties 69-53 in the Green Mountain Holiday championship.

“Tonight’s game was a really tough early season test for our team. MSJ is a skilled in physical team. Despite facing adversity this week and being short on players tonight, all 8 guys showed up ready to play,” stated interim head coach, Brendan Scherer. “We competed hard throughout the game and supported each other. I think we built some character tonight as a team and will learn a lot from this game going forward.”

Jackson Goodell got the Terriers off to a fast start with an assist inside to Terrier Center Owen Laross and a reverse layup that put the Terriers up 4-1 3 minutes into the first.

The Terriers would keep it a one possession game with 2 minutes remaining in the second frame after Walker James banked home a 8 footer to cut MSJ’s lead to 21-19. However, the Mounties were able to rattle off 8 straight points allowing them to go into the break leading 32-23.

The Terriers had plenty of scrap left in them as they opened the 3rd on an 8-2 run after Laross banked home a turn-around J, which cut the Mountie lead to 32-29. On this night, the Mounties were just too fast, as they were able to stretch out their lead to as many as 16, on their way to starting 2-0 on the season.

The Terriers were lead by Jackson Goodell’s 14 points and Jack Cravino’s 13, including 3 triples. Jonathan Terry contributed 11 points and 14 boards.

The Terriers drop to 1-1 on the season and continue their opening season road trip with a Monday game at Poultney. Tip time is set for 7pm.

Terriers open with grinder of a win over Green Mountain

EVER GLORIOUS!

CHESTER-Leading from wire to wire, the Terrier boys basketball team withstood a late charge from Green Mountain in opening their season with a 42-33 victory over the Chieftains in the first round of the Green Mountain Holiday Tournament in Chester.

“Certainly beating the defending Division 3 champions on their home court is an exciting way to start the season,” said Interim Head Coach Brendan Scherer. “All 11 players showed up focused and played with energy. I am very proud of the performance and look forward to getting better each day.”

The Terriers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off a Jamison Nystrom free throw and a Jack Cravino elbow trey. A Nystrom drive and finish along with two Walker James free throws put the Terriers up 12-2 after the first.

BF would extend their lead to as much as 16, after a Jackson Goodell tip in. However, Green Mountain would run off 8 straight points including two treys to cut the lead to to 22-16 at the break.

Senior Jon Terry got things going for the Terriers in the fourth with five points, that again saw BF’s lead expand to as much as 10. The Chieftains had one more run in them as back to back threes put them within one possession at 36-33 with 90 seconds remaining. BF would ice the game on the line, hitting 4 of 6 from the charity stripe down the stretch while shutting Green Mountain down en route to starting 1-0 on the season.

Terry lead the Terriers with 14 points. Nystrom followed with 8 points and 8 boards, while center Owen LaRoss pitched in with two points, six boards and two blocks.

The Terriers will travel back to Chester Thursday for a championship matchup with the MSJ Mounties who easily handled Twin Valley 66-11 in their first round matchup. Tip time is set for 7:30pm and can be watched with a subscription on the NFHS Network.

COVID-19 Changes this week

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has struck home, as I tested positive on Friday and will have to quarantine until next Saturday. Let me tell you, this disease is no joke, as even while being vaccinated, it has leveled me in a way that no flu ever has.

Now on to the good news. Coach Scherer has agreed to take over for the week starting with tonight’s 6-8pm practice. The short transition will be seamless as he is more than capable along with the strong leadership of our captains and team as a whole, to prepare for next week’s kick off to the regular season. I cannot thank Coach Scherer enough for stepping in as a volunteer coach and taking the reins until I return…next man up indeed!

I have made a few changes to next week’s practice schedule. Wednesday, we will have the late slot, with JV going from 6-730 and Varsity 7-830. Other than that, the schedule remains the same.

Looking forward to getting back on the Court soon!
