Terriers extend win streak to 3 with win at Leland and Gray

TOWNSHEND- Next man up, is certainly a phrase that is taking on new meaning for this years Bellows Falls boys basketball squad. With two starters out for Tuesday’s game, it was Pat Barbour and Colby Dearborn’s time as the two combined for 25 points to help the Terriers take a 71-51 road win over the Leland and Gray Rebels.

“Pat and Colby stepped up big for us today,” stated head coach Evan Chadwick. “We preach in practice that each player needs to be ready when their number is called, and these two certainly answered the call tonight.”

Barbour was a force inside the paint early, scoring 8 points in a span of 4 minutes on a variety off inside moves and offensive rebound put backs. Barbour also grabbed 5 rebounds during this stretch. Dearborn was solid in the paint as well, as he finished a floater and then dished out a pretty inside assist to a slashing Barbour for another easy bucket.

After the first, the Terriers led 17-9.

“We talked after the first quarter about not settling for perimeter J’s,” stated Chadwick. “When we attacked the rim, we were very successful.”

The Terrier bigs had their way in the second quarter, dominating the offensive glass and going to the free-throw line with regularity. Owen LaRoss was dominate scoring 6 points, grabbing 5 boards and blocking two shots. Jake Moore came off the bench and hit two free-throws as a result of a steal and drive, and Jon Terry finished another inside bucket on a drive from the point.

Entering the third the Terriers led 36-19.

The second half saw much of the Terrier bench get significant minutes. Although the Rebels trailed by double digits the rest of the contest, their effort, hustle and ability to hit outside shots kept them within shouting distance for most of the contest.

“Impressed with Leland and Gray’s effort,” stated Coach Chadwick, whose Terrier squad jumps to 4-2 on the season. “It’s a great lesson for anyone, that if you sustain your effort level, good things will start to happen.”

Jonathan Terry led the Terriers with 19 points. Barbour followed with 17 points and Owen LaRoss added 10 points, 13 boards and 4 blocks.

BF is next in action on Friday with yet another road game as they travel to South Royalton to face off with a very strong Wildcat team. JV tips at 5:30 and varsity at 7pm.

Clarification on Sunday Practices

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

I wanted to send this post to be clear on Sunday practices. We understand that each player has different family and personal obligations that may need to be met on Sundays. We encourage players to prioritize these obligations and, if they conflict with a Sunday practice, to feel free to miss the practice in order to pursue these other opportunities.

In sum, Sunday practices are always considered optional. If an athlete cannot make a Sunday practice their standing on the team and playing time will not be penalized.

All we ask is that the athlete reach out to the coach 24 hours or more in advance to let them know that they will be unable to make the Sunday practice so the coach can adjust their practice plan accordingly.

Terriers earn road win at Arlington

ARLINGTON–The Terriers took their show on the road Wednesday night earning a hard fought 48-34 victory over the Eagles.

“Wins come in all shapes in sizes,” stated Coach Chadwick. “When you go on the road, play a tough opponent in an electric atmosphere, I will take any shape win we can get.”

The first quarter was a back and forth affair, as the Colonels and Eagles stayed within one possession for most of the quarter. Jackson Goodell scored 6 points in the frame to lead the BF effort in taking a slim 18-17 lead.

The Terriers started to stretch the lead some in the second, thanks mostly to their high pressure man defense. Walker James was magnificent in the quarter with 3 steals, while Jamison Nystrom scored 6 points At the break BF led 31-22.

The second half would see BF stretch the lead to as many as 16 on a Jesse Darrell and-1. BF would hold Arlington to 12 points in the second half and, despite missing several front ends of the one-and-one, were able to withstand any Eagle charge on their way to going to 3-2 on the season.

Nystrom led the Terriers with 10 points, Jonathan Terry followed with 8 points and 7 boards, while James contributed 6 points, 5 steals and 7 rebounds.

The Terriers are next in action on January 4, when they travel to Townshend to face off with Leland & Gray.

Grit rewarded Terriers stand up to Hurricanes

A total team effort led to the BF W

In a back-and-forth affair against an undefeated Hartford squad, the Terriers’ depth and playmaking down the stretch secured them an impressive 72-65 victory over the Hurricanes at Holland gym on Wednesday night.

“So proud of these young men,” stated Coach Evan Chadwick. “All 12 stepped up and contributed, it was the true definition of a team win.”

The Terriers started out strong, opening on a 12-4 run that was fueled by a Jack Cravinho 3 and three inside buckets by center Owen LaRoss.

The Hurricanes would make a run in the second, outscoring the Terriers 17-12. Jacob Seaver, the long and athletic power forward for the Hurricanes scored 7 in the frame to give the Hurricanes the slight margin going into the break. “We knew Hartford was going to make runs at us,” stated Chadwick. “We just had to stay the course.”

Stay the course the Terriers did in the third, as with 90 seconds left to go, Hartford looked poised to make a run, leading by 7. Colby Dearborn would not let the Hurricanes gain separation, as he hit back to back 3s including a buzzer beater to keep the Terriers close at 51-47 going into the fourth. “Huge shots by Colby,” stated Chadwick. “He stepped up when we needed him most.”

Dearborn hits one of his two 3s in the 3rd quarter.

The Terrier faithful were treated to a frantic fourth quarter, with not much half court offense, and a lot of transition. The Terriers would reclaim the lead off a Jonathan Terry floater, and then the Hurricanes tied it back up on a Seever baseline drive.

The dagger for the Terriers would come with 45 seconds remaining. Jackson Goodell was left open in the deep corner in transition and, in stride, Jackson stepped into the three that was pure from the start, upping the Terrier lead to 68-65.

Bellows Falls would get a stop on the next possession and Terry and Goodell sank four free throws to put the game on ice for the purple and white.
