Terriers extend win streak to 3 with win at Leland and Gray

TOWNSHEND- Next man up, is certainly a phrase that is taking on new meaning for this years Bellows Falls boys basketball squad. With two starters out for Tuesday’s game, it was Pat Barbour and Colby Dearborn’s time as the two combined for 25 points to help the Terriers take a 71-51 road win over the Leland and Gray Rebels.

“Pat and Colby stepped up big for us today,” stated head coach Evan Chadwick. “We preach in practice that each player needs to be ready when their number is called, and these two certainly answered the call tonight.”

Barbour was a force inside the paint early, scoring 8 points in a span of 4 minutes on a variety off inside moves and offensive rebound put backs. Barbour also grabbed 5 rebounds during this stretch. Dearborn was solid in the paint as well, as he finished a floater and then dished out a pretty inside assist to a slashing Barbour for another easy bucket.

After the first, the Terriers led 17-9.

“We talked after the first quarter about not settling for perimeter J’s,” stated Chadwick. “When we attacked the rim, we were very successful.”

The Terrier bigs had their way in the second quarter, dominating the offensive glass and going to the free-throw line with regularity. Owen LaRoss was dominate scoring 6 points, grabbing 5 boards and blocking two shots. Jake Moore came off the bench and hit two free-throws as a result of a steal and drive, and Jon Terry finished another inside bucket on a drive from the point.

Entering the third the Terriers led 36-19.

The second half saw much of the Terrier bench get significant minutes. Although the Rebels trailed by double digits the rest of the contest, their effort, hustle and ability to hit outside shots kept them within shouting distance for most of the contest.

“Impressed with Leland and Gray’s effort,” stated Coach Chadwick, whose Terrier squad jumps to 4-2 on the season. “It’s a great lesson for anyone, that if you sustain your effort level, good things will start to happen.”

Jonathan Terry led the Terriers with 19 points. Barbour followed with 17 points and Owen LaRoss added 10 points, 13 boards and 4 blocks.

BF is next in action on Friday with yet another road game as they travel to South Royalton to face off with a very strong Wildcat team. JV tips at 5:30 and varsity at 7pm.
